I recently received a commission to make a bespoke rattle for a practitioner of shamanic womb work, working with the deep sacred feminine for healing, ceremony and ritual. She had been rather taken by one of my personal rattles, its circular shape and spiral motif, so I used this for the basis of her rattle.
We had spoken in depth about the work that she does and the energies that work with her. Fortuitously fox medicine has been calling to both of us and I have a small amount of fox fur left from a vintage collar, I had obtained for one of my own ceremonial garments, perfect.
Fox teaches us how to hide in plain view, how to be invisible when we need to gain insight about that which is being hidden. Fox sniffs out the tricksey and alerts us to deceit. How to sit quietly with an open and watchful eye until the whole story has come into the light. Being swift and nibble, fox will aid you in quick decisive action when the time is right. Reminding you not to take yourself or life too seriously, fox will work his whiley wit to whip you into a whirl, trip you over your own toes whilst chasing your very own tail, if you have let yourself get too tied up in knots. Relax, laugh and let go, fox has got you covered with his in visibility cloak protection.
Blood Stone and the rosewood beads from a rosary seemed a fitting addition. Known as a potent healer, blood cleanser and stauncher of wounds, blood stone has been carried by warriors into battle for as long as we have been having them. It is said to increase our intuitive powers and our creativity, whilst giving protection from negative or heavy energies, keeping the barer grounded and connected.
Rosewood soothes the heart with compassion, bringing strength to our vulnerability during times of inner conflict. And these beads had come from a rosary given to me by a dear and powerful woman who works with the deep and sacred feminine.
Magpie dropped a feather for this tail to bring joy, love and lasting fortune. Magpie’s medicine aids spiritual growth and transformation, bringing balance to mind, body and spirit.
With horse skin rawhide and elder wood for the main body of this rattle, great strength, gentle power and protection are wrought. Elder represents the Crone and as such is at the beginning and end of things, womb magic, birth and rebirth. Horse brings courage, kindness, compassion and gentleness as strength.
These are the things that called to me to have their energies woven into this sacred healing tool. Each rattle I make is completely unique and unrepeatable, I am in a space of deep and intense connection throughout the process of bringing into being. A process which of itself brings me great joy and pleasure in the creating and great delight at the completion when I finally get to meet what has come to be.
