Apart from new white goods everything in my kitchen has been built from scratch, mostly with materials that have been up-cycled, recycled and reclaimed. The sink support was made from pallet wood although the cupboard framework wood was purpose bought.

Luckily for me a friend of mine saw that I was building a kitchen and offered me some oak worktop off cuts, which saved me from making mine out of old floorboards. Instead I used these for the shelving inside of the unit.

We had a bit of flooring chipboard left over just the right size to make a work surface shelf under the windows. Using a decorators steamer for removing old wallpaper, my dad and I steamed a piece of moulding to face the curved edge and tiled the surface with I box of tiles I’d picked up from a lady who had some left over from her kitchen renovation project (she charged me £20 for the box of tiles but threw in a bespoke oak door for free, as it was damaged). A little chest of bathroom draws someone was throwing out meant I didn’t have to make draws, Pheww!

The tall bookshelf unit that has travelled with me for the last 10 years and a left off marble tile form the kitchen in the main house, makes a good home for the kettle and the coffee machine, extra storage and my cookery books.

The wall tiles are made up of some freebee throw in from the lady with the box of tiles and the oak door and the left over slate tiles I’d bought for my hearth (these I sealed with yacht varnish). And finally shelves made from pallet wood, floorboard off cuts, an old table top and some hard wood planks. Oh and of course the pallet plate rack and some pretty material off cuts to hide unsightly bins and dress windows. Voi La!
